The Figo and Aspire, though good cars, have not put sales charts on fire in India. With a dozen odd options available in this price segment, the best way out for Ford was to come up with something ‘different’ – say hello to the ‘Sports Editions’ of the Figo hatchback and the Aspire sedan.
Ford Figo Sports Edition 1.2 Petrol: Rs 6.31 lakh
Ford Figo Sports Edition 1.5 Diesel: Rs 7.21 lakh
Ford Aspire Sports Edition 1.2 Petrol: Rs 6.50 lakh
Ford Aspire Sports Edition 1.5 Diesel: Rs 7.60 lakh
All prices are ex-showroom Delhi
Now unlike most other manufacturers, these ‘Sports Editions’ are more than just a sticker job. No, the engine power hasn’t gone up but Ford engineers have tweaked the suspension set-up along with better tyres to make sure all that power (and torque) goes down in a well controlled and better manner.
So what is new on the outside? Well, the Figo S definitely looks better than the two thanks to the blacked out alloy wheels and contrasting roof finish. It also gets black treatment for the grille and a spoiler at the back. The Aspire Sports Edition on the other hand remains a bit sober with no black treatment for the alloy wheels or the roof. Also, both cars now run on wider and taller rubber. These new 15-inch alloy wheels are the same that were once seen on the old Fiesta. Width is also up from 175mm to 195mm.
We can’t stop praising Ford for making both the cars handle better. The Figo and Aspire Sports Editions now run on shorter stiffer springs and also get a front anti roll bar. These changes will make a huge difference in the way these cars will feel at higher speeds – the steering also feels a tad stiffer thanks to wider tyres.
On the inside, both the editions get all-black treatment along with stitched seats. Note that the Sports Editions of the Figo and Aspire are based on the Titanium model which means dual front airbags along with ABS and EBD will be standard.
At Rs 7.21 lakh, the Figo Diesel Sports Edition makes for a great buy if you are in the market for a fun to drive car. It might be a diesel but packs in 100 horses along with 215 Nm of torque, enough to make it accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in about 11 seconds along with a top whack of over 185 km/h.
